Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., but it is also one of the most preventable. With routine screening and early detection, we can reduce the risk and save lives. At Nevada Health Centers, we want to empower our patients with knowledge and resources to take charge of their health. Let’s talk about colorectal cancer, risk factors, symptoms, and most importantly—how you can prevent it! For more information check out – What is colorectal cancer?
Understanding Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer begins in the colon or rectum, often starting as polyps, which are small growths that can become cancerous over time. Many people do not experience symptoms in the early stages, making screening essential for early detection.
Risk Factors to Know
While anyone can develop colorectal cancer, certain factors increase your risk, including:
🔹 Age 45 or older (Risk increases with age)
🔹 Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
🔹 Diet high in red and processed meats
🔹 Low fiber intake and poor nutrition
🔹 Lack of exercise and obesity
🔹 Smoking and heavy alcohol use
🔹 Chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis
Signs & Symptoms
Colorectal cancer doesn’t always show symptoms early, but as it progresses, you might notice:
✔ Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, narrowing of stool)
✔ Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
✔ Unexplained weight loss
✔ Persistent abdominal pain, bloating, or cramps
✔ Fatigue and weakness
If you experience any of these symptoms, talk to a healthcare provider right away.
Prevention & Screening: Your Best Defense
The good news? Colorectal cancer is highly preventable with regular screenings! The American Cancer Society recommends starting screening at age 45, or earlier if you have a family history or other risk factors.
✅ Colonoscopy (every 10 years) – Detects and removes polyps before they turn into cancer.
✅ Stool-based tests (annually) – Non-invasive at-home tests that check for blood or DNA changes.
✅ Flexible sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years) – A less invasive option to examine part of the colon.
